National History

"The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation."

Our History

The San Francisco State Chapter of SHPE was founded in 1985 by a group of visionaries who felt SFSU should also have a SHPE chapter so that their generation and future generations would benefit from the support, empowerment, and opportunities that this organization has to offer. Today, as another generation comes in, we feel that it is our duty to preserve the tradtion of helping ourselves as well as those waiting beneath our wings to achieve the highest standards in our society.

Mission

SHPE's mission is to promote the development of Hispanics in engineering, science and other technical professions in order to achieve educational excellence, economic opportunity and social equity.  We fulfill this mission by increasing educational opportunities, promoting professional and personal, growth and enhancing pride within our organization.
